To convert any fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator (the top number) by the denominator (the bottom number). For example, 3/8 is calculated as 3 divided by 8, which equals 0.375. If the division does not terminate, the result is a repeating decimal.
A repeating decimal is a decimal representation of a fraction that ends in a repeating cycle of one or more digits (e.g., 1/3 = 0.3333...). Our tool highlights repeating cycles inside parenthesis.
To convert a decimal to a fraction, write the decimal as a fraction with a denominator of 1 followed by as many zeros as there are decimal places (e.g. 0.375 = 375/1000). Then, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator and divide both by it to simplify to lowest terms.
